We are lucky, for we can talk or read until "all secure" is sounded. Page 6 On a typical day now that we are back at sea, the navy mess attendant wakes us up at 7:30, and we jump out of bed feeling like a million dollars, sure that we've whipped all trace of seasickness from our midriffs. Starting breakfast, we soon find that less has been whipped than we thought, and we all hurry to the rail where nothing really happens after all. For as soon as the view of the horizon confirms the fact that it isn't really rocking, our sickness leaves.

In subsequent bombing raids and artillery bombardments, the 56th Evacuation Hospital was hit repeatedly, and suffered numerous casualties. After an artillery barrage rocked the hospital on April 4, it was decided to bring in a new hospital unit to replace the battered 56th. Despite their protests that they were ready and willing to carry on, they left the Anzio beachhead for new duty near Naples. As Dr. Collins writes, Shells from both sides, by the thousands, screamed over our heads twenty-four hours per day....
