Rockets whooshed aloft, trailing a stream of tiny stars as if trying desperately to catch up with the climbing Lancaster. On the ground there were other brilliantly coloured fireworks, spurting and blazing brightly before fading abruptly. Shooting stars leapt into the RAF bomber’s wake, and then for a moment darkness cloaked the base from which the fireworks were being set off. Aboard J-Johnnie, Cranswick and his crew watched the display with child-like fascination. Perhaps the flyers viewed the fireworks as a bad omen; a suggestion, maybe, that fireworks of a more lethal sort awaited the bombers over France.

He must be satisfied that the targets are accurately marked by the Pathfinders; and when this has been done, he calls up the Main Force bombers with a code message on the radio telephone. Continuously circling, continually drawing the fire of the enemy guns, Master Bomber exercises a constant and rigid control of the operation. He instructs the Main Force aircraft when and where to bomb in relation to the markers. When smoke from the exploding bombs blots them out, he holds off the remaining bombers until fresh indicators can be dropped.
